PETA fired off a letter to the USDA demanding that it begin protecting animals raised for the bloody fur trade after PETA investigators on a fur farm in Midland, Michigan, saw chinchillas who were being electrocuted, causing painful seizures to the animals' hearts, and having their necks snapped while fully conscious. Animals killed for their skins currently receive no federal protection from the kinds of abuses that our investigators witnessed.

The killing of rabbits for their fur is the fastest growing part of the global fur trade yet little is known about it. 50 million animals are slaughtered worldwide each year for their fur but this figure does not even include rabbits as accurate figures are hard to come by. The Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT) have infiltrated and exposed this hideous trade. A trade where millions of rabbits are confined to bare wire cages, kept as breeding machines, their throats slit and their furs turned into boots, hats, gloves and trim for jackets.

Investigation into fur farms in Finland 2011

Finnish animal rights organisation Oikeutta Eläimille has published a new comprehensive investigation into the fur industry in Finland. Material includes 80 fur farms from all over Finland.

Over seven months, 30 fur farms, seven hours of footage and one and a half thousand photographs, Animal Defenders International investigated a random sample of Finnish fur farms. This investigation exposes the terrible suffering that is part and parcel of the fur industry.

Foxes and mink are wild animals but in fur farms, they cannot cope with the unnatural environment they find themselves in. Worse still, the conditions in these farms are awful: their short, miserable lives are spent in squalid surroundings full of fear and distress, suffering injuries, infection and deformities. All for an unnecessary product for which a variety of alternatives are available.

It is time for designers who use fur, and the people who wear it, to take responsibility for the way that the product they are wearing has been produced.

Dogs and raccoon dogs skinned alive

Check the Internet for counterfeit, cheap Ugg boots, and you're likely to find some real bargains - that is if you can close your eyes and realize the horrific sacrifices raccoon dogs and other animals have had to pay for someone's fashion statement.

The video below has created worldwide outrage calling for the ban on raccoon dog trade. The video shows a farmer pulling a raccoon dog out of its cage, slamming her on the ground and beginning the skinning process from the dog's back leg while the farmer's boot is pressed against the animal's neck to keep her from moving. The dog is then thrown on a pile of other skinned dogs, and as the filming continues, the dog barely lifts her head and waits for the final suffering relief of death which can take hours.

Raccoon dogs are an Asian species and are crosses between domestic dogs, foxes and jackals.

China supplies more than half of the finished fur garments imported for sale in the United States. Even fur that has been labeled from a European country is likely to have been an animal raised and brutally skinned alive from an unregulated Chinese fur farm.

Real Ugg boots are made from Australian sheepskin and can range in price from $120 to $300. The Australian head of Ugg boots states these revelations and videos about raccoon dog fur have damaged the entire organization. Fake Ugg boots have been marketed all over the world and commonly sold online.

Take Action for Truth in Fur Labeling

U.S. law allows clothing designers and retailers to omit, on their labels, any mention of animal fur on fur-trimmed jackets. They are even allowed to dye real fur to make it look fake, and sell it without mentioning on the label that it is real fur.

And "Asiatic raccoon" on a garment label means that the fur is really from a raccoon dog who may have been skinned alive.

Consumers deserve to know if animal fur is on a garment, and the real name of the animal. Fortunately, legislation (H.R. 891/S. 3610) has been introduced in Congress to protect consumers and improve fur labeling laws.

Currently, real fur does not have to be labeled as such so it is down to the consumer to decide if an item they are buying contains fake or real fur. This can be very difficult to judge given the quality of some fake furs. Shop staff are often in the same position so can only provide an opinion rather than an assurance that the item is not real fur.

Norway To Shut Down Fur Industry

We hope that this marks the beginning of the end to the fur industry.

As more and more people become aware to the horror and injustice that is the fur industry, it is only a matter of time before the industry crumbles, and the cages are smashed to pieces while the animals run free!

All information about this recent decision is being taken from Norwegian news sites, so they are in Norwegian, not english. Here are some translated quotes from todays vote.

“Today was the Labour Party’s national convention in a controlled liquidation of the fur industry. The decision is a major victory in efforts to fur animal freedom. This could mean the beginning of the end for the Norwegian fur farming.

Both political parties, various professional bodies and all animal protection organizations support the requirement for a phasing out of the Norwegian fur farms. Now begins the final stage in the struggle to abolish Norwegian fur farms for good.

The work brings results after the Network for Animal Freedom has revealed animal abuse at Norwegian fur farms for three consecutive years, the debate on fur farms have become an important political issue. Today’s victory also reflects how much enthusiasm for fur animals has become.

Today’s decision of the Labour Party shows that all the activists’ tireless efforts produce results. Work for fur animals’ freedom has yielded results, and the fur industry’s propaganda will no longer dominate.”

“Labor is committed to lay down their fur farming in Norway. It was decided at the party’s national convention Sunday.

A majority of the editorial committee had little faith that fur farming should be conducted in accordance with current requirements for ethical animal husbandry. The proposed controlled liquidation of the about 300 fur farms in operation in Norway today.

Animal Welfare Alliance is celebrating the decision.

Norway Pelsdyralslag are disappointed the Labour Party’s decision to go for liquidation of fur industry.

– But it is not the hook on the door, “said Chairman Bertran Trane Skadsem.

West Hollywood bans sale of fur clothing

WEST HOLLYWOOD -- The city of West Hollywood has approved a ban on the sale of fur clothing. It's a big win for animal rights activists and the first ordinance of its kind in the U.S.

Councilmember John D'Amico spearheaded the campaign. At a city council meeting that lasted 7 hours, members unanimously approved an ordinance that would ban the sale of clothing made of fur, wool and animal hair.

The city council will meet again in two weeks to hammer out some details, including when the ban will go into effect and what the penalties would be if the ban is violated.
