Trikala, Greece - Ignorance can be bliss....the sweet carefree lack of knowledge that allows us to pretend that atrocities don't exist.
And knowledge is power, but it can also mean pain.
Because once you are aware that something terrible is happening, it is difficult to close your eyes to the problem - it is hard to go about your daily life as if nothing is wrong.
Dogs are dogs - whether they live in a comfortable home with a loving owner, or if they are locked behind bars at a shelter. Dogs are still dogs - dogs with feelings...dogs that can experience pain, fear....happiness and love.
It is this knowledge and this pain that is spurring on a small group of individuals to attempt to make a difference in the lives of homeless dogs in Greece.
Dogs that are not treated as they are here in the United States - dogs that are either roaming the street, homeless, or dogs who are sitting in poorly funded shelters - lacking medical - or even food.....
Those people who are aware of these dogs are not able to close their eyes to their suffering - and they have taken it upon themselves to make a difference.
A bit of information on the individuals who are trying to make a difference and about the dogs they are trying to save:
There are 140 Animals at the Trikala Shelter in Greece, which are literally Starving to Death. They're in Dire Need of Food Donations, Medical Supplies, or Funding! There are Only 5 Rescuers trying to care for 140 Dogs at this Shelter! These women are literally going to Restaurants in the area, Begging for Leftover Food for these Animals! I've created this page raise awareness of this situation! There are several people helping with this Rescue Effort, including Viktor Larkhill who runs, "Let's Adopt Global".
These individuals are begging for help - they are pleading for monetary donations - they are begging for donations to be mailed directly to the shelter so that the dogs housed there can have some semblance of comfort.
On the wish list are the following items:
Donations can be sent to:
Filozoikos Syllogos Trikalon "o Argos"
32 Miaouli Street
Trikala, Thessaly, Greece P.C 42100
A Chip-In fund has also been created for the animals in need. A link to this fund can be accessed here.
And finally, you can access the Pet Food Bank in Greece by clicking this link.
You can follow the efforts of these individuals at the Trikala Shelter Dogs Facebook Page. Not everyone is willing or able to lend a hand to homeless dogs that are located thousands of miles away - but if you want to help - please, at the very least, visit the Facebook page and give it a "like".

Disappointing at least, was the visit of the 3 members of Argos, to the suggested by the municipality, new shelter in Agious Apostolous, Trikala. The pessimists were justified and the optimists were speechless.
In order to get to this area, you have to go through 11 km from the town center and 1 km of dirt and provincial road. We cannot even imagine in what state will be this countryside road at winter!
The whole area is abandoned. For this place to be functional, the Municipality must spend a big amount of money, which they say they don’t have! First of all the fencing. It is 1.5 meter in
height, destroyed in many points by time. It needs to be 2 meters in height and the addition of a new door.
The cells are 50 in number. The kennels, are for 2 medium sized animals each, ridiculously small, with no space whatsoever for the dogs to move in.
The dogs are left free in the courtyard 2 times a day, so it is important that the kennels and cells to be spacious! The courtyard must be spacious too, in order to avoid argues between
them.
Well the courtyard, in our disappointment, is a small pathway, unless there is a second field merging with this one, which we couldn’t see, due to the lush vegetation (higher than the fence
itself)!
Moreover, there is no shadow at all! Translation: we need to construct again, new roofs and canopies (of course with our own funds-we just paid for the last ones).
Our biggest problem remains the transportation. Most of the members (4 members only), don’t drive. One of the girls, who is in charge of feeding and doesn’t have a car, cannot reach this area. We
don’t have the luxury of picking out volunteers. The mentioned lady, has to walk each day 1 km from the main road (back and forth, day and night, summer and winter), to reach the existing
shelter. In the main road, she often misses the bus and she has to hitchhike, to get to the town.
How will the members of Argos, reach the new shelter? 11 km back and forth? In the middle of nowhere? How will possible adopters, find this place? And why go in all that trouble?
Here is our question: If the Municipality and the Mayor wants to spend a big amount of money for the new shelter, isn’t more logical to give it for adjustments and additions to the existing
shelter?
We refuse to believe that the Mayor, who showed interest in our problems and was willing to help us, wants us to move to this forgotten place. We believe that he was misinformed by his
consultants.
